2015 St. Petersburg Plus/Minus

Below are plus/minus (+/-) stats for the St. Petersburg race.  I explained each type of +/- stat in this post.  The 3 best +/- figures in each column are highlighted in green.  The 3 worst figures in each column are highlighted in red.a

Start +/- Notes

Luca Filippi, Marco Andretti, Graham Rahal, and Stefano Coletti all gained 3 spots on the initial start.

Ryan Hunter-Reay lost 9 spots in turn 1 on lap 1 (from 8th to 17th), but battled back to a 7th place finish.

Carlos Munoz, Jack Hawksworth, and Sage Karam lost 4, 3, and 3 positions respectively on the start.

Restart +/- Notes

Juan Pablo Montoya gained 6 positions during restarts, while Graham Rahal gained 5.

Although Charlie Kimball had a R+/- of -15, this was entirely due to his incident with Graham Rahal on lap 54.

Francesco Dracone lost 9 positions during restarts.

Helio Castroneves, Sebastien Bourdais, James Hinchcliffe, and Sage Karam all lost 3 positions during restarts.

Start and Restart +/- Notes

Stefano Coletti was a pleasant surprise on starts and restarts.  Coletti likely lacks experience restarting races on cold tires, but it didn't show in St. Pete.  In addition to the 3 spots he gained on the start, he gained an additional 9 positions during the race's 5 restarts for a Start and Restart +/- of 12.  Stated another way, Coletti gained an average of 2 positions each time the flag man waved the green flag.

Rahal and Andretti were also strong on restarts, gaining 5 and 4 positions respectively.  Their Start and Restart +/- numbers of +8 and +7 were 2nd and 3rd best in the race.

Green +/- Notes

The 7 spots Andretti gained on starts and restarts combined with his 3 positions gained under green flag gave him a Green +/- of 10.

Luca Filippi and Takuma Sato both gained 8 spots under green.

The 15 positions that Kimball lost after the spin with Rahal were partially offset by the 6 positions he gained under green conditions at other times, but still left him with the second worst Green +/- (-9).

Carlos Munoz and James Jakes both lost 6 positions under green, but Jakes lost those positions during an incident with Simona de Silvestro.

Sage Karam had a Green +/- of -17, but a Yellow +/- of +16 meant he lost only 1 spot during the race.

Yellow +/- Notes

Marco Andretti lost 8 spots during yellow flags.

Sato's impressive Green +/- number was negated by a Yellow +/- of -16.
Simona de Silvestro lost 5 positions under yellow during the race, but this was the result of good strategy decisions.  She made pit stops under the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th yellows, but was running near the back of the field each time she pitted.  If a long green flag run had happened at the right time, she would have gained lots of track position.

Total +/- Notes

Jack Hawksworth was +13 for the race, and all of those positions were gained under green flag conditions.  Hawksworth passed cars because he was faster than they were, not because his pit crew had blazing fast stops.

Luca Filippi had a quietly solid day, improving 10 positions during the entire race.  This gave him the second best +/-, behind only Hawksworth.

Although rookie Gabby Chaves' 5 pit stops suggest that he didn't keep his nose entirely clean (the winners pitted only 3 times, while Chaves pitted 3 times during a stretch of 10 laps), he avoided catastrophe and improved 5 positions during the race.  Given where he qualified, Chaves and his team should be satisfied that he stayed out of trouble and finished on the lead lap in his first IndyCar start.  St. Petersburg is not an easy place to make an IndyCar debut.
