About The Spotters' Stand

Data Sources

The following websites provide me with data, ideas, or both.  I suspect most people who would be interested in this blog have already found these sites, but in case you haven't, here they are.

http://www.racer.com/ has news and opinions on all types of racing.  Specifically, Marshall Pruett's 2014 Mid Ohio Rewind section that detailed Scott Dixon's fuel saving convinced me that more articles about sector times should be written.

http://www.indycar.com/Stats has lap charts and drivers' sector times.  As of now, these are in PDF format and must be converted/moved into a spreadsheet to be manipulated in any way.  But, it's GREAT that the data is available to the public.

http://racing-reference.info/ has results for most (if not all) series, races, and championships.

http://www.champcarstats.com/'s 'How They Scored' section shows past American Open Wheel Racing points systems that have been used.

http://grantland.com/ has articles many authors who at least touch on some form of what I consider to be 'advanced statistics', including but not limited to Bill Barnwell, Kirk Goldsberry, Jonah Keri, Ben Lindburgh, and Sean McIndoe.

http://fivethirtyeight.com/ is focused on applying statistics to all fields, from sports to politics to the economy.

http://nasportscar.com/ 's Ben Wedge and Kevin Welling analyze sector times for the Tudor United Sports Car Championship and the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge, respectively.

http://imsatiming.com/'s name is pretty self explanatory.  It provides IMSA timing data, including lap charts and sector times.

Kristin Brown is my wife.  She watches racing because she loves me, but I still try not to make her watch too many.  She's a bit of a Scott Dixon fan, and reviews posts to make sure that a casual race fan who stumbles onto this site has a chance of understanding them.  (Believe it or not, posts are even more dense before she makes suggestions.)

Juan Rojas and Andres Rojas were my roommates for 3 years.  They're Formula 1 fans, and I sort of converted them into IndyCar fans (although I think Juan Pablo Montoya's return also helped a lot).  They review posts before I put them up, just to make sure I'm not too far out in left field.
